The Whiskey Route - Most Popular Path

Route Overview

The Machame Route is the most popular path to Kilimanjaro's summit, known for its stunning scenery and excellent acclimatization profile. Nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for being more challenging than the "Coca-Cola" Marangu Route, it offers diverse landscapes from rainforest to alpine desert.

The route follows the "climb high, sleep low" principle, particularly on Day 4 when you ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp (3,960m). This significantly improves acclimatization and gives you a much better chance of reaching the summit successfully.
